MidContinental Chemical has the latest generation of intake valve detergents (IVD), designed to meet current government regulations and performance needs for gasoline marketers. And our staff can help you maintain the required records related to the use of IVD additives. This includes developing a custom volumetric additive reconciliation (VAR), training on collection of this data and review of the data to assess compliance.
Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by the EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline...by as much as 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.
Top Tier detergent gasoline is a recently established, new standard for gasoline performance. Four of the world's top automakers, BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota recognize that the current EPA minimum detergent requirements do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.
If you would like to differentiate your gasoline products from your competitors, our regional representatives will gladly sit down with you to outline what is required, including determining the necessary treat rates and the most cost-effective chemistry to achieve Top Tier status for your gasoline products.
Our diesel fuel additives provide fuel detergency, corrosion control, and stability enhancement. They help protect against wear by improving fuel lubricity and controlling harmful deposit build-up. They also help improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
Our diesel and premium diesel packages are used in a number of applications from
over-the-road, to agricultural, to marine fleets. They improve winter operability and cetane numbers. Each market segment requires its own unique chemistry and
support programs.
Our soy-based premium diesel additive upgrades #2 diesel to premium. It can boost fuel economy, cleans injectors, increases lubricity, extends engine life and reduces
emissions. It is the environmentally friendly way to enhance diesel engine performance and maintain clean air standards. We also offer antioxidants to help extend storage life and stability of biodiesel blends.
Common components of our premium diesel packages are:
- Cetane Improver.
- Wax Anti-Settling Aids.
- De-icers.
- Cold Flow Improvers.
- Corrosion Inhibitors (petroleum and ethanol).
- L-10 Superior Detergent
- Lubricity Additives.
- Fuel Stabilizers.
- Dispersants.
- Demulsifiers.
- Static Dissipators.
Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel is highly paraffinic. This potentially increases the wax content of the fuel, leading to low temperature handling problems. Wax crystals formed at low temperature can block fuel filters. Pipes and hoses can cut off supply of fuel to the diesel engine.
Dyes
Both the IRS and the EPA require the addition of red dye to certain classes of diesel fuel. However, each agency requires that the dye be added to a different class of fuel, at a different concentration and for a different reason. MidContinental Chemical offers dyes that help petroleum distributors and users meet these requirements.
Pour Point, CFPP, LTFT
Our additives are designed to lower the operating temperature of fuels. MCC has developed cold flow improvers that modify the size of the wax crystals in ULSD. They can be used to lower pour point, cloud point and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of various sources of ULSD with or without the addition of kerosene. The products also have utility in certain biodiesel blends.

Lubricity Additives
Lubricity of fuel is important to satisfactory operation of diesel engines. The fuel must lubricate many moving parts within the fuel injection system. Lubricity of diesel fuel has become even more critical with the move to ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel. The severe hydrotreatment to remove sulfur from ULSD removes naturally occurring lubricity properties from the fuel. This means that ULSD has poor lubricity.MCC has developed lubricity-improving additives designed to meet both industry and engine manufacturers' standards for lubricity.
Anti-Stat Additives
ULSD fuel exhibits low conductivity due to the removal of the naturally occurring conductive polar species during the hydro-desulfurization process. This process can lead to risk of electro-static ignition of ULSD fuels.
Switch loading is the practice of loading diesel fuel into tank trucks previously containing a high volatility fuel, such as gasoline. This practice can create a highly hazardous situation. A single static discharge from the electrically-charged diesel fuel can ignite the gasoline vapor, causing an explosion.
MCC has developed a number of anti-static additives designed to dissipate the electric charge build-up in ULSD fuel. The products are designed to work at very low dosage (typically 1-5 ppm) and at the low temperatures typically encountered in the northern part of the United States and Canada during the winter.
Stabilizers
In theory, ULSD fuel should have better stability because the amount of unsaturates in the fuel has been reduced during the hydro-desulfurization process. However, this process also removes the naturally occurring stabilizers present in the fuel. This can lead to peroxide formation during storage of the fuel. In addition, blends of ULSD fuel with biodiesel have been shown to be unstable due to the oxidative instability of the biodiesel component of the blend. MCC offers the Albemarle Corporation's ETHANOX family of antioxidants. They stabilize gasoline, diesel, biodiesel blends, lube oils, and other chemical products.
Cetane Improvers
A diesel fuel's cetane number is a measure of its ignition quality. MCC has a number of cetane improvers that can improve the ignition quality of diesel fuel.

Detergents
Detergent additives are important chemicals in the prevention of deposits being formed in the combustion systems of both gasoline- and diesel-powered engines. Dirty combustion systems lead to loss of horsepower, poor fuel economy, poor idling and increased emissions. MCC has an extensive line of detergent additives for both gasoline - and diesel-powered engines. Additive and treat rate recommendations are available for one tank clean up or to keep clean.
Jet Fuel De-icer
It is important for jet fuels to be free of water. During flight, any water present in the fuel will freeze, thus cutting off fuel supply to the jet engine. MCC offers de-icer products that prevent ice formation in jet fuel contaminated with water.
Antioxidants
We offer antioxidants that are used to stabilize lube oils, gasoline, diesel, biodiesel blends and other chemical products.
